| RLH Fiber Links Resist NASCAR Heat |
|
September 5, 2007
|
RLH Fiber Optic Link equipment played an important support role in the number one premier NASCAR race of the season at the Fontana/California Speedway over this past Labor Day. Based on the excellent reliability of our Fiber Optic Links, Sprint/Nextel requested that RLH supply and install additional 4x1 T1 equipment to support their communication needs for the 2007 California Speedway Labor Day race.
A testimony to the hardened reliability of RLH telecommunications equipment, the official temperature in Fontana was 107 degrees during qualifying for the Sharp Aquos 500. But temperatures at the track were a hot 112, reportedly soared to 128 atop the grandstands, and measured a staggering 140 on the asphalt surface.
"We're seeing track temperatures of almost 150 degrees and that's unheard of," said four time Nextel Cup champion Jeff Gordon. "It's pretty crazy out there because you start slipping around on the tires even before you complete a lap."
RLH equipment, operating at track level, was unaffected by the extreme heat and performed flawlessly throughout the event. RLH equipment was also installed three years ago at the Las Vegas Speedway and the Phoenix Speedway NASCAR race tracks.

New RLH Fiber Alarm Card Now Available
The RLH Fiber Optic Alarm Card has been newly updated to allow monitoring AC Power Supplies in addition to monitoring of DC power sources. This system is a great way to monitor power sources while maintaining complete high voltage isolation.
This new system provides a method of remotely monitoring an RLH 120VAC powered battery backed High Density or Low Density DC power supply, and transmitting normal and alarm status through a single strand of fiber optic cable.
The system requires an RLH Alarm Transmit Card, and an RLH Alarm Receive card. The Transmit Card is connected directly to the AC and DC power source to be monitored. The Alarm Receive Card is located at the opposite end of the fiber optic cable and is locally powered. Upon loss of power, the alarm terminals will open and LEDs display the status of the power supplies being monitored.
The DC PWR INPUT on both Alarm Cards is not polarity sensitive, and the system will operate up to 2 miles over multimode fiber and up to 6 miles over single mode fiber. The RLH Fiber Alarm system card are the standard RLH Fiber Optic Link form factor, and are designed to easily and conveniently fit into the wide array of housings and enclosures RLH industries supplies.

RLH Power Over Fiber (POF) System
After extensive engineering research and development, the RLH Power Over Fiber System is currently in pre-production, with evaluation units being prepared for shipment.
POF information sheet in PDF format
Fiber optics is the most reliable and safest method of transmitting data or voice services verses all other known copper or radio transmission methods. Now the RLH research and design team has engineered a method for transporting power over fiber optic cable thanks to the advent of our new RLH POF System.
These new systems promise to be widely used by Telephone, Power and Wireless companies that are interested in providing only the best high voltage isolation for copper Telco lines entering high voltage areas.
The RLH POF System delivers power over all-dielectric fiber optic cable, without any conductive copper entering the high voltage isolation area. The POF system utilizes integrated lasers that transmit power through the energy inherent in laser light. Once the laser light is modulated and sent over fiber optic cable, the light energy is then converted back into DC voltage, which may then be used to power RLH Fiber Optic Link telecommunication equipment. The POF system is compatible with a variety of RLH Fiber Optic Link Cards such as the 4 Wire Data/SCADA, 56k Frame Relay and others.
The RLH POF System is a 2 space (EIA 2RU) rack mount unit, designed to be mounted either in front rack rail or center mount Telco rack configurations, and has front panel display that indicate laser and power status.

RLH is pleased to announce the RLH Universal HDSL System
RLH Industries, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of our new RLH UHDSL Fiber Optic Link System.
Fiber optics is the most reliable and safest method of transmitting data or voice services verses all other known copper or radio transmission methods. Now the impossible task of providing a method of transporting HDSL service over fiber is completely resolved thanks to the advent of our new RLH UHDSL Fiber Optic Link System.
Two years in development, the new cards promise to be widely used by Telephone, Power and Wireless companies that are interested in providing only the best high voltage isolation for copper Telco lines that must enter high voltage areas. RLH Industries, Inc. filed a formal application for US Patent office for this new system earlier in the year.
The RLH UHDSL Fiber Optic Link System interfaces directly with any standard HDSL1, 2 or 4 copper telephone line. The CO UHDSL card converts the electrical copper signal for transmission over fiber optics (multimode up to 3.6 miles or single-mode up to 9.6 miles). The UHDSL Sub side card then converts the signal back from fiber into a usable electrical HDSL copper signal. Users can also perform complete end-to-end HDSL system loop back by installing a locally powered HDSL RT/NIU by locating it directly after the UHDSL Sub card.
For additional features and information, please click here for the RLH UHDSL Fiber Optic Link System® Data Sheet.

IEEE SA 1590-2003 Standards
The IEEE SA (Standards Association) Power System Communications Committee group recently passed new standards that apply to RLH Industries, Inc Fiber Optic Link products. This standard can be used as a guide when customers, Telco's, utilities, installers and engineers wish to deploy the Fiber Optic Link equipment in high voltage environments. To order the complete IEEE 1590-2003 standard please visit http://standards.ieee.org
The following are key excerpts from the IEEE 1590-2003
Abstract: “the main emphasis of this recommended practice is the engineering design of optical fiber communication facilities servicing, or connected to, electrical supply locations.”
5.2 SERVICE via fiber optic facilities
“The use of a fiber optical system to serve an electrical supply location should be considered when the bandwidth requirements of the wireline facilities are exceeded. In addition, the fault producing the GPR and induction at the electrical supply location may exceed the capability of the metallic wireline facility.”
8.3 Benefits of all-dielectric cables
“When the all-dielectric fiber optic cables are used to serve these electrical supply locations, they will have a nonmetallic strength support member (i.e., nylon, fiberglass, or equivalent) and shall not contain any non metallic pairs, which will also be immune to the fault-produced GPR and induction.”
10.1 Electrical power station
“The CFJs should be located at the remote drainage location or at the edge of the zone of influence based on the fault-produced GPR calculations.”
10.2 Wireless sites
“It is recommended that the CFJs be located outside the ZOI.”
“Note-In the absence of GPR data, the CFJ may be located at a minimum of 150 m from the tower.”
11.1 CFJ
“The CFJ, at the end of the metallic pairs, is typically powered by an isolated source such as a CO line power.”
13.1 General safety considerations
a) Educating personnel regarding the special hazards of working on communications facilities located at electrical supply locations.
b) Minimizing the possibility of simultaneous contact with both the remote and local grounds.
c) Reducing the time that personnel spend working at the site under conditions that may expose then to danger.”
